Description

The Trident II D5 Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) has been the Navy’s paramount Sea Based Strategic Deterrent since initial deployments on Ohio-class nuclear submarines in 1990. This flagship strategic weapon system has been periodically upgraded to extend its original 25-year service life, resulting in the deployment of the Trident II D5LE SLBM in 2017. This weapon system was designed with an extended lifetime for use in current Ohio-class and future Columbia-class submarines until 2042 and beyond. A significant factor of the platform’s longevity is the module-based approach to the missile subsystems and electronic housings. Implementation of an analog-digital conversion device provides a sustainable interconnect between proven legacy hardware such as Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDTs) and updated digital networks. To modernize the avionics module, Luna proposes the development of the Universal Digital-Analog Receiver and Translator, or U-DART. The small form factor U-DART device will be designed for high reliability across the entire Trident II SLBM operational envelope, with accurate error detection and rapid mitigation to ensure high data throughput and integrity. The Phase I project will focus on system design, proof of feasibility, and technology transition planning, ultimately culminating in a feasibility demonstration at the conclusion of the effort.
