Description
The flexible fuel bladders used on the KC 135 Stratotanker have insufficient durability leading to pinhole leaks at seams and interfaces. Currently, there are no technologies to eliminate or mitigate these pinhole leaks. Fuel in flexible bladders experience high net pressure at elevated altitudes where atmospheric pressure is reduced. This net increase in internal pressure exacerbates pinhole leaks leading to fuel loss resulting in hazardous conditions over time. These small leaks are difficult to detect and correct during maintenance checks, leading to down time of up to 150-400 hours per aircraft. To address this need, Luna Labs will utilize our extensive experience and to further develop the self-healing sealant. During this Phase II program, sealant materials will be evaluated for fuel resistance, tensile strength, and adhesive properties. Extensive testing will be done to ensure the self-healing sealant is stable at operating pressures and temperatures. Luna Labs will perform prototype demonstrations at partner facilities to ensure practical transition to full scale fuel bladder systems.
