Description

Air Force is seeking a novel high energy rechargeable lithium battery technology to provide high quality enduring power for Battlefield Airmen (BA) wearable electronics and small unmanned aerial system (SUAS) applications. Recent advancements in high energy electrode chemistries have proven feasible for achieving specific energy densities exceeding 400 Whr/kg. Lynntech proposes to develop High Energy Rechargeable Li-Metal with Enhanced Safety (HERMES) Batteries by using a stabilized Li metal anode enabled by polymer sponge hosts, a protective electrolyte with stabilizing additives, and a high capacity cathode. During Phase I, we will develop advanced electrodes and electrolytes, fabricate and demonstrate lab-scale HERMES cells with high energy density, long cycle life, good rate capability, and high safety. We will describe an initial design for prototype cells along with performance estimates and an improvement plan. During Phase II, we will further improve the cell materials and design, and develop prototype cells to meet Air Force requirements. Cost projection will be performed to substantiate the design, performance and operation costs. Prototype units and a detailed design and performance analysis will be delivered to the Air Force.
