Description

Statement of the problem or situation that is being addressed in this application. Air conditioning is the single largest category of residential electricity consumption in the United States, representing 16.9% of total residential electricity and leading to an annual contribution of approximately 117 million metric tons of CO2 to the atmosphere. Exterior window coverings, particularly automatic motorized shades, are a proven solution that can facilitate enormous energy savings by decreasing air conditioning needs. However, due to the high cost of those shades, adoption has been extremely limited, especially within disadvantaged communities. General statement of how this problem is being addressed. This project will explore a low-cost, automated exterior shade solution that requires no motor and will have particular appeal for disadvantaged communities in dense urban neighborhoods located in hot, humid climates. The unique features of the proposed system circumvent these problems. The cost effectiveness of the proposed system comes from the synergy of an innovative shade design, a low-cost manufacturing method, and the benefits of scale. What is to be done in Phase I? The objectives of this Phase I project are as follows: 1. Conduct a rigorous stakeholder needs study and identify the corresponding system specifications needed to meet those needs 2. Develop a high-level system design, including modeling and optimization of system performance, cost, energy savings, and peak-demand reduction 3. Develop, test, and refine a proof-of-concept prototype system 4. Develop a detailed plan for Phase II and commercialization Commercial Applications and Other Benefits The GrowShades™ system will provide a simple way for users to block direct sunlight from coming into their apartments or homes during the heat of day, which will create enormous energy savings. It will be optimized for use in dense, low-income urban communities. Our innovative and cost-effective system not only frees up energy and money for these communities, but also reduces the heat stress on those living there.
