Description
Mainstream demonstrated the feasibility of a novel Hydrothermal-based Blackwater Treatment System (H-BTS) that can produce energy and low-tier water from blackwater or other wet wastes. A 1,500 gal/day demonstration unit will be designed, built, and operated during the Phase II project. The system will be able to blackwater with a minimum Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) of 1450, 1170, and 2930 mg/L, respectively. By producing low-tier water and energy from wet wastes at forward bases, the H-BTS will reduce waste disposal logistics, protect soldiers by reducing trucking conveys, and reduce costs by generating energy and low-tier water. Mainstream fully demonstrate a scaled-up system during the Phase II to prove the H-BTS is capable of meeting the Army’s blackwater disposal needs and pave the way for commercialization.
