MARITIME ARRESTING TECHNOLOGIES LLC — Department of Homeland Security SBIR Phase I: DHS221-002

Description

To satisfy the requirements of the Department of Homeland Security for a non-lethal rapidly deployable countermeasure for protected perimeters and structures. Maritime Arresting Technologies, LLC in partnership with Tampa Deep Sea Xplorers, LLC, propose an entanglement carpet that utilizes a web of strong monofilament fibers which can be rapidly deployed to protect and secure a perimeter and/or prevent access to an area or building. The carpet would be constructed of a strong flame resistant backing material that is coated with a durable non-stick material such as Teflon. The monofilament fibers would be woven in large loose coils to the backing material. The fibers would be monofilament fibers (ie 200 pound test monofilament fishing line) configured to maximize the potential of ensnaring the feet and limbs of individuals who attempt to tread upon it. The carpet could be marked with bright warning markers to discourage individuals from approaching or violating the protected area. The carpet can be easily deployed and after use can be rinsed with plain water, recovered, and stored for multiple uses. We call this solution the “Haz-Mat.” Our phase I work would involve the design and testing of various materials and configurations that would maximize durability, effectiveness, and economy. The testing will include destructive and non-destructive testing of materials and functional testing. Results will be published in appropriate publications and venues. At the end of Phase II, the result of this effort will be a viable commercial product for use by security agencies.
