Description

The TARMAC Framework and prototype algorithms will be developed in the Phase I effort. The TARMAC Framework algorithms will enable decentralized coordinated groups of autonomous platforms to perform sensing missions without explicit communications, as long as the platforms have a common operating picture and objective. The algorithms will define mission plans and individual platform behaviors for a wide range of platform types, missions, operating domains, communications availability, and operational constraints. The TARMAC Framework uses decentralized partially observable Markov decision processes and scenario abstractions to generate robust algorithms. The primary advantages of this approach are its lack of complexity and scalability. In the Phase I effort, the TARMAC Framework will be used to develop prototype algorithms for a range of scenarios, operating concepts, and domains. The algorithms defined in Phase I will include operational constraints, such as energy and communications limits. Based on simulations performed in Phase I, the accuracy of the algorithms will be assessed. In addition, Phase I results will include an assessment of the impact of the TARMAC Framework on the broader development and use of multi-agent systems in defense and other applications. The Phase I effort will build the foundation for verifying the effectiveness and robustness of the algorithms in Phase II simulations.
