Description
During Phase I of this Chemical and Biological Defense (CBD) SBIR program, NanoSonic has teamed with Moonprint Solutions and OceanFront 3D Printing to design and physically demonstrate a new Chemical, Biological, Radioactive, and Nuclear (CBRN) protective glove that also offers enhanced tactility, 6 hr+ comfort, and touchscreen capability. Specifically, we have developed a new quat-polymer that offers CBRN protection and mechanical strength exceeding butyl rubber with an average tensile strength at break of 3150 psi, elongation of 1240 %, and Young’s Modulus of 390 psi. NanoSonic’s thin elastomeric gloves can be manufactured using seamless dipping or 3D printing techniques from solutions or extruded strands of the polymer. Importantly, each of the polymers within the network can be made electrically conductive for use with touchscreen devices. The glove materials passed challenge agent resistance with low cumulative permeation mass against for Soman (GD) (< 1.25 µg/cm2) and distilled mustard (HD) (< 4.0 µg/cm2) per testing at Intertek. Additionally, NanoSonic verified protection against soman and distilled mustard simulants [dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and 1,6-dichlorohexane, respectively], methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), toluene, and tetrachloroethylene. During Phase II, system level assessment and full NFPA 1994 testing shall be carried out as detailed herein.
