Description

The US Navy requires additional electrical export power from the JLTV for both unique vehicle applications and tactical capability. The JLTV program office is introducing a larger capacity 20kW alternator, and despite its 30% increase in power output, it is less than 30% of the electrical power required for special applications. Integrating advanced high-density generators can provide an additional 50+kW of available power for the specific needs with a minimized impact on weight and vehicle performance. The proposed solution is a combination of a compact, novel, adjustable speed drive (ASD) and an advanced high density electrical generator. Driven by the vehicle’s PTO interface, and/or within the engine compartment, the system generates required power while the vehicle is stationary and on-the-move. Across the range of vehicle operation, the ASD independently controls the generator speed to optimize electrical power output. This electrical power is available to power on-board equipment, charge battery banks, or to export for other electrical demands. The solution enables the JLTV to support a variety of electrical power-heavy applications. These applications range from command centers, ambulance, other electrical driven attachments, or advanced weapon systems.
