Description

Our proposal will provide compelling evidence of the value of event-based image sensing over current state of the art image sensing in space-based robotics applications. We propose to use a lab environment to emulate a robotic vehicle in space approaching a spent rocket stage as a use-case for Active Debris Removal. We will gather benchmark performance data, in a side-by-side set of experiments with current state of the art image sensing and processing. We bring commercial software for event-based image processing, currently under development, a world leading subject matter expert in event-based image processing and a lab environment that has extensive experience researching space-based robotics. Upon completion, we expect to have key design criteria, including budgetary costing data, to build a prototype solution for Phase II. We have strong support from Boeing Phantom Works as they research and develop their own product roadmap for space-based robotics. In addition, we are supported by Hughes Research Labs (HRL), who have a desire to design and build an infra-red event-based image sensing solution. HRL are willing to provide resources to our team, should we be successfully selected for Phase II.
