SimX has developed the first wireless, multiplayer, and fully immersive professional-grade virtual reality (VR) medical simulation training system. SimX’s product is commercially available and its paying customers include some of the most prestigious institutions in the United States, including Stanford University, the Mayo Clinic, Northwestern University, Children’s National, and the University of Texas. SimX’s solution allows learners to practice their diagnostic and treatment skills on any patient, in any environment, with any tools while providing detailed after case feedback around which critical actions were or were not performed, and what happened throughout the scenario -- and all at 1/10th the cost of traditional mannequin simulation wand with significantly increased scale and flexibility. The USAF 24 Special Operations Wing (SOW) has purchased the SimX system for an operational training and evaluation (OT&E) pilot, and has since expanded the pilot to a total of three sites. 24 SOW has realized significant benefit from the SimX system, but the OT&E process has identified four major areas for adaptation and improvement in order to better meet the national defense-related mission need of 24 SOW and other units to provide operational medical training and evaluation. These four major areas are: 1) improved portability, 2) increased military realism and immersion, 3) enhanced usability and tracking. Based on the three areas identified for adaptation, we have proposed 6 technical objectives (TOs) to be accomplished under this Direct to Phase II proposal. The work planned in the proposal will dramatically increase the value of the SimX platform to meet the national defense-related mission need, and will also provide significant dual-use benefit to civilian customers as well as non-defense public sector customers. SimX has a robust commercialization capability and plan that will allow the benefits of achieving the proposed TOs to be realized immediately after development is complete. The identified USAF end-users and customers are committed to the success of the project and are also actively pursuing follow-on Phase III opportunities, and SimX is also in discussion with a variety of additional US Government (both defense and non-defense) customers for additional Phase III work.
