Description
As part of the SBIR topic N221-004, the Department of the Navy (DON) has stated a need for an aircraft modeling software that enables geometry visualization throughout a multidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO) run. To address this need, Spectral Energies (SE) will develop and build upon current open-source geometry modeling tools, such as OpenVSP and ESP/CAPS with a focus on incorporating geometry visualization while testing, analyzing, and changing the design. To accomplish this overall goal, SE will develop tools and functionalities within the appropriate software that specifically enable geometry visualization and manipulation in tandem with the modeling and simulations (M&S) tools available (see Fig. 1). Specifically, in Phase I, ESP/CAPS will be modified such that the geometry model can be viewed throughout an entire MDAO run, while simultaneously updated according to the solver. This functionality will be tested in ADAPT and AIDEN/NDARC MDAO frameworks provided by the DON. During Phase II, the software will be modified so specific components of the geometry can be viewed separately from the whole. This capability can lead to computational cost reduction of the entire process. After Phase II, SE will work with the DON to incorporate the new tools into their existing MDAO frameworks.
