Description

The Navy recognizes that there are significant design challenges associated with hypersonic flight, including the heat loads generated by the extreme friction induced by drag forces at Mach 5 and above. Typical aerospace grade materials cannot withstand the temperatures and mechanical loads associated with high Mach flight for extended periods. Materials are available to withstand such temperatures; however, they do not insulate the vehicle interior from the impinging heat. A lightweight, effective thermal protection system (TPS) is critical to maintain aircraft interior temperatures at or below 110°F to maintain integrity of payload, avionics, and sensor systems. To address this shortcoming, ADA Technologies proposes to develop a new TPS, the Refractory, Advanced Thermal Protective Aircraft Coating (RATPAC) capable of providing effective, lightweight thermal protection. The RATPAC is comprised of layers of refractory material, a thin metal substrate, and an energy-absorbing inner layer. In Phase I, ADA will adapt its existing thermal protection materials to hypersonic vehicle protection, generate test coupons, and perform thermal tests to assess performance. ADA will benefit from project collaborations with Raytheon Missiles and Defense, Lockheed Martin Space, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, and AFRL/RX.
