Description
The Navy is adopting SDR technology as it modernizes its legacy radio equipment. For example, MIDS JTRS terminals are software-defined, plug-and-play replacements for hardware-defined LVTs. SDR technology is attractive because it can reduce the logistical burden and cost of fielding new capabilities. It can also allow the Navy to be more responsive to the evolving electronic warfare and cyber threat environments. In this SBIR, WPL proposes to develop, implement, and demonstrate innovative FEC and ARQ algorithms for tactical data links that could be deployed as firmware and/or software upgrades to MIDS JTRS terminals. In Phase I, we will develop and demonstrate FEC and ARQ algorithms for Link-16 that provide 10+ dB improvements in terms of Eb/N0 and increased A/J performance. We will also work with our partners at Collins Aerospace in Phase I to develop reduced-complexity FEC decoding architectures that are relevant to modern tactical data links. In Phase II, we will produce, develop, and demonstrate software prototypes of our improved FEC and ARQ algorithms for MIDS JTRS terminals.
