Description

The proposal addresses the problem of bi-directional synchronization of data between devices operating in an austere environment and servers in the cloud (in an enterprise type environment) or cloudlets (Humvees, drones, small ships, or other mobile platforms). A highly flexible and scalable architectural framework called Hierarchical Sync is proposed for addressing the challenges and requirements of not only spartan, but also hostile, environments characterized by intermittent communications links and a high probability of loss of participating nodes. Innovative techniques (such as Multi-Part Transfers, and De-duplication) are introduced for improving the odds of completing transfers of files between devices. Advanced technology called Multi-Cloud Information Dispersal is introduced for tolerating the complete loss of cloudlets that may be operating in contested environments without impairing the overall synchronization service. Another advanced technology called Spectral Aggregation is introduced for more effectively using satellite links, which is frequently the only backhaul option feasible in remote and austere environments.
