Description

As military vehicles (both ground and sea) expand in mission roles and in offensive and defensive weaponry, there is an ever-increasing demand for greater energy storage. Continuous advances are needed to increase performance (i.e. Wh/kg, range, power output) and safety (i.e. non-flammability, impact survivability). Current 6T lithium-ion batteries have been limited to energy of ~75 Wh/kg, which is not sufficient for the high energy and power needs of military vehicles. Additionally, they typically use carbonate electrolytes which are extremely flammable. CRG proposes to address these issues by developing a high specific energy (>250 Wh/kg) pouch cell that integrated into current 6T formats, utilizing a high capacity graphite anode, high specific energy dense and thermally safe cathode, and a non-flammable temperature/voltage stable electrolyte. The developed cell will be capable of improving the safety and operational performance over current military vehicle batteries.
