Description

For this Phase I project, DexMat will optimize the density and conductivity of its Carbon nanotube (CNT) braided yarns, for application in aircraft, autonomous vehicles, drones, UAVs, and space systems, with the ultimate goal of for improved performance and reduced cost. DexMat will investigate the effects that both small diameter and large diameter fiber filaments have on the performance of the CNT braided yarns produced from these fibers. And establish the combination that leads to the densest, most conductive braid possible. This Project will result in the production of at least 20 m of braided yarn with density over 1 g/cm3 and conductivity over 4 MS/m, thus establishing the feasibility of DexMat’s approach. The market demand for a lightweight wire is great in the military, aerospace and commercial sectors. The weight of cables used in aircraft and spacecraft significantly impacts their payload carrying capacity and limits the range of mobility of these vehicles, for a fixed load of fuel. Cables made from DexMat fibers and coatings will be a lightweight alternative. The use of DexMat fibers as primary conductors and EMI shielding is projected to lead to a 50% - 80% weight reduction per meter of wire / cable.
