Description
Aircraft Carrier decks are a very harsh operational environment, Tie Down Fittings (TDF) must perform without issue while being exposed to the corrosive marine environment and abuse from aircraft restraint. Currently, the 4130 steel TDF receives little protection other than paint. Painted steel in this environment will corrode. However welding TDF’s into place ensures their attachment and functional operation, where other potential TDF materials such as stainless alloys will require significant new and distinct welding practices not currently in Navy use. The proposed DLC coated TDF, secure welded installation, is unchanged, while current wear and corrosion induced maintenance burdens are eliminated. DLC application to the TDF does not reduce critical strength to restrain aircraft but eliminates TDF corrosion and wear. DLC’s functionality has broad application to other high strength Navy parts that can significantly improve fleet readiness and provide significant lifecycle cost savings.
