Description
Seawater biofouling, especial algal biofouling, is a major threat to critically important heat exchanger operations on Naval vessels. The program will develop a high heat transfer, biocidal coating applied to titanium heat exchanger components using a scalable electrodeposition processes, such that seawater heat exchanger performance and sustainably is enhanced. These biocidal coating are anticipated to inhibit biofouling formation while maintaining the functional thermal and corrosion resistant properties of the heat exchanger. The Phase I Base will identify biocidal composite coatings consisting of a metallic base alloy with a controlled density of biocidal inclusions, and Ohio University will evaluate these biocidal composite coatings for their effectiveness in biofouling and biocorrosion prevention. These results will be utilized to build the framework of an analytical model. The biocidal coating will be applied to the internal surface of a simulated heat exchanger tube. A preliminary scalability assessment will be prepared. Phase I Option will downselect the specific biocidal coating composition for application within simulated heat exchanger components such that continuous flowing subscale biofouling tests can be performed. This approach will ensure we will have a viable model and a high likelihood of successful integration into heat exchanger platforms that meet the Navy’s targeted needs.
