Description

To address the Navy’s need for an electrical energy sensing device for determining the status of Electronic Safe and Arm Fuzes (ESAF), Intellisense Systems, Inc. proposes to develop the Remote Electromagnetic Fuze Scanner (REFSCAN) based on novel implementation of a new electromagnetic field sensor array. Specifically, the innovations in sensor fusion, machine learning, and signal processing will enable the system to capture and process a two-dimensional scan of the electromagnetic fields radiating from a target device. As a result, this system offers an “energized or not” diagnostic for fuze status, precise magnitude measurement of stored or active electrical energy present in batteries, firing capacitors or circuit elements, and a flexible handheld form factor operating from a safe distance, which directly address the Navy requirements. In Phase I, Intellisense will demonstrate the feasibility of REFSCAN by simulating its EM field sensing capabilities and testing an initial prototype array. The Phase I results will demonstrate the path toward a realizable REFSCAN product for the Navy. In Phase II, Intellisense plans to develop a full REFSCAN prototype, integrating the novel sensor array into a handheld acquisition system with tablet display diagnostics, and machine learning-driven postprocessing. Intellisense will demonstrate the Phase II prototype capabilities on known configurations including, but not limited to, M762A1, M767A1, M782 fuzes for artillery rounds, and the M7 spider anti-personnel munitions. The system will be further demonstrated with unknown improvised explosive device (IED) surrogate configurations with a variety of battery sizes and unique circuitry based on consultation with the Navy. Five Phase II prototypes will be delivered to the Navy for evaluation.
