Description

Traditional numerical simulations tools that are applicable to simulating the explosive dispersal of particles utilize Lagrangian particle methods. The Lagrangian particle methods are accurate but become computationally intractable for applied problems involving large number of particles. To address this limitation, the K&C team proposes to use multiphase models using an Eulerian two-fluid approach based on the kinetic theory of granular flow (KTGF). The KTGF approach has been developed to handle the interaction between strong shocks, dense granular layers, and to consider phenomena related to particle-particle interactions, collisions, and compaction processes in dense and dilute granular media. To address realistic blast simulations, namely, efficiently handling particle size polydispersity, and to ensure accurate transport of particle motion, the Eulerian KTGF approach will be combined with a Quadrature-Based Moments Methods (QBMM) for the polydispersed granular particles. QBMM has been successfully and extensively used in typical applications of chemical engineering by providing trackable numerical tools for complex multiphase reacting flow CFD simulations. The proposed approach will be implemented into an existing state-of-the-art Eulerian code with unique granular multiphase reactive flow capabilities. Additional capabilities include models for combustion processes and adaptive mesh refinement (AMR).
