Description
The benefits of utilizing polymer composite materials for shipboard components have been recognized by shipbuilders for many years. The high strength to weight ratios, corrosion resistance, and design flexibility of these materials are an attractive alternative for traditional metallic parts. However, shipboard structures have Flame/Smoke/Toxicity (FST) requirements that present a challenge for composite systems. To date, implementation of these systems has required relaxation of FST requirements, compromises in system strength or durability, or overdesign with added weight which negates many of the benefit of using the composite materials. The Navy requires a composite system that can meet FST and structural requirements without sacrificing the inherent benefits of utilizing the advanced materials. To meet the Navy's need, Luna will leverage extensive experience in developing FST retardant additives for Navy composite resins. Luna will enhance this technology, developing a commercial product which can be applied to a variety of structural resins to create composite systems which meet Navy FST standards while retaining superior mechanical strength and durability.
