Description

Due to increasing specific power and specific energy requirements for advanced Air Force weapon systems, next-generation power sources that satisfy those strict requirements are necessary. Metal-Air batteries are a perfect candidate to exceed the minimum specific energy requirement of 750Wh/kg, however, low ionic conductivity of current electrolytes, limits the capability to achieve a specific power of >2kW/kg. During Phase I, Lynntech proposes a two-way study of molten salt metal air thermal battery, as well as a bi-phase molten salt solid oxide electrolyte design to determine the most efficient route towards delivering a safe power source that will meet both energy and power requirements while also having a shelf life of above 20 years. Aluminum is the prime candidate materials that will be explored as it has shown feasibility to achieve a specific energy above the 750 Wh/kg threshold target, and is a far less reactive material compared to lithium which will in return improve the safety of the system. A final design concept for a 5kW power source will be performed based on the practicality and superior material performance. Phase II work will consist of developing a prototype which will meet target requirements and deliver 5kW for 10 minutes.
