Description

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite applications place demanding requirements on energy storage solutions, including robust construction, lightweight design, high performance and long service life.  The incremental improvements to the performance of traditional Lithium Ion batteries (LIBs) do not provide enough performance gains, and LIBs have difficulties meeting the required specific energy and service life.  Due to LEO satellites’ frequent eclipse period, the batteries need to be able to endure over 50,000 charge/discharge cycles over 12 years of service life. To meet the future requirements for LEO missions, LytEn proposes to develop the next generation rechargeable battery using its unique LytEn 3D Graphene™ to enable its proprietary Lithium-Sulfur cell chemistry that can deliver a two-fold increase in specific energy density and service life compared to state-of-the-art LIBs.
