Description
UAM requires beamforming mmW radar to achieve high resolution, long range, all-weather sensing. Currently, beamforming is achieved with Active Electronically Scanned Arrays (AESA), which are far too heavy, power-hungry, and expensive for use on UAS. A beamsteering metamaterial antenna is proposed, providing substantial reduction in cost and power, while realizing superior range and field of view for mm-wave radars, ideally suited to UAM and small UAS. The Phase I effort is to demonstrate a new approach for extremely low-SWaP, high gain, 3D beamforming through design, prototyping, and measurement.
