Description

The objective of this work is to demonstrate the feasibility of a GPS disciplined oscillator (GPSDO) that is smaller than 1 cubic centimeter and can operate through peek shock accelerations up to 18000 g while maintaining a time accuracy of better than 10 milliseconds throughout the mission while not connected to GPS. In the design of this GPSDO, several factors need to be taken into account including: (1) the amount of time it has to calibrate to GPS; (2) the amount of time it needs to operate without GPS and hold the 10 ms accuracy; (3) the effect of this shock event on the time accuracy; and (4) temperature and aging effects on the oscillator time accuracy. In this work, we will design and build initial prototypes of shock hardened oscillators and measure their timing accuracy through shock events up to 18000g. We will also conduct an initial requirements review and conduct preliminary design activities for the final miniaturized GPSDO.
