Description
To ensure software will work as expected and in a resilient fashion in a production (or operational) environment, testing procedures must be fully integrated into the development of an application or service. This includes testing of environmental factors and the recovery from those factors. The White Cell concept is an implementation of Chaos Testing/Engineering; a suite of services aimed at introducing problems within an application or system deployed inside of a cluster to identify weaknesses and engineer in resiliency. Omni will investigate existing capabilities, such as the Netflix Simian Army (a test suite of chaos engineering services) and gauge their applicability to the Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2) operational environment via the Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS) Command One capability. In some cases, Omni may need to develop custom chaos engineering services to simulate JADC2 operational environment events. Planned services include, but are not limited to the following: • Random services being turned off over random intervals • Excessive bandwidth restrictions between services at random intervals • Introduction of artificial latency between nodes/services by delaying communication • Random network disconnects/drops between services • Common hacking exploits run against applications and services • System flooding of large amounts of data • Excessive traffic generation towards random nodes/services • Detection of unhealthy instances/nodes • Identification of unused resources • Shutdown of entire clusters, availability zones, and other larger outage scenarios.
