PROJECT SUMMARYOptimized LED Lighting for Improved Quality and Production of Microalgae IndoorsPI: VozhdayevGeorgiy V.Institution: PureBiomass Inc.The Proposed Technology is an industrial scale algae photo-bioreactor system designedto remove excess nutrient loads from wastewater treatment effluent and produce high- value algae biomass as a co-product while reducing overall energy requirements.Thesystem provides a new alternative when chemical phosphorous removal is costprohibitive or when wastewater composition is not suitable for standard biologicalphosphorous removal.The system's use of a recyclable plastic envelop for processcontainment allows system operators to culture higher value algae strains and protectthem from aquatic pests like competing algae species and other grazers.The cultivationsystem contains several innovations along with a comprehensive systems integrationdesigned to make it beneficial to both large scale and small scale operators.The primary objective of the Phase I project is to show proof-of-concept of the system'sability to operate as a continuous flow reactor to achieve nutrient removal targets and toestablish the limits of key operating parameters that will affect the technology's degreeof economic favorability.If the proposed technology can be brought to fruition positiveimpacts are expected in the form of: 1.) improved quality of both fresh and marinewaters 2.) an increase in the productivity and resiliency of American agriculture throughnew natural products and processes 3.) generation of a new economic stimulus throughinfrastructure construction and the creation of new product markets and 4.) a real stepforward in achieving the type of industrial scale algae cultivation that is needed toachieve a sustainable biofuels.
