Description

Sterile water for irrigation (SWFIr) is critical for wound cleaning and for healing of surgical incisions to decrease the likelihood of secondary complications such as infection. Currently, deployed medics must transport and maintain bags of SWFIr that are heavy, expensive to transport, and rely on a supply system that may be subject to interruption, interdiction, and attack. It would be far better to sterilize locally available potable water, but there is no portable technology to do so. Under DHA SBIR Phase I and II projects, TDA has developed a portable sterile water for injection (SWFI) generator. In collaboration with our partners at the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) we will leverage this expertise to develop a SWFIr generator that meets USP requirements for on-site production of SWFIr in austere locations, ensuring there is a constant supply to improve health outcomes for battlefield patients. In the Phase I project we will produce prototypes for testing to validate the SWFIr against USP specifications and will obtain feedback from Air Force customers. In addition to defense use, this technology also has a large civilian market for humanitarian aid.
