Description
Soldiers require upwards of 15 L of water/day to remain properly hydrated. On an extended mission, soldiers can obtain water from indigenous sources using recently developed TIC/TIM filters that are compatible with the MOLLE hydration pack. There is currently no way to assess the continued efficacy of the filtration system in the field. Triton Systems and its partner will develop a handheld electrochemical sensor using novel sensing technology to assess water quality and determine if water filters are still functioning or need to be replaced. The sensor will leverage Triton’s experience in developing sensor products for the military, including work in sensing chemical warfare agents, and extensive microfabrication expertise. By the end of Phase I, we will design and build a sensor with proven ability to sense salt, inorganic ions, pesticides, and organophosphorus compounds at or below their minimum exposure limits in water temperatures from 4 °C to 49 °C in environment temperature from –33 °C to 52 °C.
