Description

In the naval aircraft many disparate materials are subject to galvanic corrosion, due to the marine environment. Some of these aircraft have hybrid (carbon fiber composite/aluminum) designs that exhibit accelerated corrosion damage, compared to legacy all-metal frames, due to galvanic interaction between the fastener, the composite skin, and the aluminum frame. In the Phase I SBIR program, UES Inc in collaboration with Penn State University proposes to develop an additive process to repair and restore corrosion damage in aluminum alloy. The additive process will have the potential to be utilized on-site. The feasibility of the additive process will be demonstrated through analysis and experimentation to assess the expected strength and fatigue life benefits of the repair and restoration.
