Description
The objective of this program is to develop and demonstrate a flexible and efficient cooling system (FECS) for helicopters and other aircraft. FECS can be used to cool lasers, electronics or other devices in slow or fast-moving aircraft that are operating in high ambient temperatures. It utilizes a modular approach that allows FECS to be quickly and easily modified for various payloads. There are three main enabling technologies: a multi-function cold plate / evaporator (CPE), compact efficient compressor, and an intelligent and adaptive control system. The evaporator can be configured in many ways by the operator in the field, depending on the desired cooling interface. The FECS utilizes a variable speed positive displacement compressor that can change its speed and reduce its electrical power draw to the minimum needed to provide the cooling required while holding a precise temperature setting. Key features of the control system are adjustable operating parameters, i.e. compressor, fan, and pump speed, and aperture setting; and, adding supplemental cooling loops to the system for a range of equipment cooling options. These components will be integrated into the FECS to meet the needs of the Navy.
