Description

As the capabilities of military-worn systems continue to improve the battlefield airman (BA) is required to carry more electrical energy and power. This means that the BA must carry more rechargeable batteries to support dismounted missions. These batteries often come in the form of the bulky BB-2590 battery. One solution to this problem would be to develop conformal batteries made using additive manufacturing techniques with comparable specific energy. To this end, the CFD Research team proposes to develop and demonstrate rechargeable 3-D printed solid-state Li-ion cells in this Phase I effort. The development of the electrode and electrolyte inks will utilize in situ polymerization to form a continuous solid-state electrolyte network through the printed layers minimizing interfacial charge transfer resistance. The results of this program will support the development of a prototype cell in Phase II for Air Force evaluation. The development of printable solid-state cells will provide the BA with ergonomically friendly power sources to support missions and provide highly customizable, flexible form factor solid-state cells to the commercial market.
