Description
DDG-51 class destroyers are highly successful and have been frequently upgraded with advanced sensor platforms, new weapon systems, and improved support systems since the early 1990’s. Increasing technology adoption has driven increased power requirements and that dynamic has created a new paradigm where electrical generation and distribution size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) are more of a premium than at the start of production. Magnetic chemistries and 3 phase single core topologies are mature and proven and competition is fierce, making transition of older to newer transformer designs ideal and optimal today. Reducing cost of ownership for electrical distribution while making gains in size / weight support the trend of adding new and better shipboard technologies.
