Description
Topology optimization (TO) is a versatile structural design tool that can be used to develop new components and materials exhibiting enhanced performance relative to traditionally-designed alternatives. The US Air Force can leverage TO in the development of munitions and selectable effect warhead technologies. The proposed Phase II effort consists of two primary outcomes. The first is delivery of Corvid’s TO software to Air Force end users. Enhancements will be made to Corvid’s existing software to improve design optimization capabilities in dynamic weapon events, minimize computational cost of the process to efficiently obtain designs, and streamline the user interface for targeted Air Force end users. The second primary outcome is optimization of Boeing’s GBU-39/B small diameter bomb warhead to demonstrate the TO software on an application of interest to the Air Force. The warhead case structure will be optimized to improve penetration survivability and lethality with a focus on multi-story building engagements. Prototyping and subscale testing on mock targets will demonstrate performance gains. The Phase II effort will focus on commercializing both the TO software and optimized GBU-39/B structure by engaging with both Air Force end users and potential commercial partners such as Boeing to transition the developed technology to fielded use.
