Description
Device Solutions (DS) and the Wireless Research Center (WRC) are teaming to create a development plan for inNvative digital paging for emergency responders using public television ATSC 3.0.Leveraging open standards, broadcast and public safety infrastructure, modern network devices, and new wireless electronics, our approach will provide responders and incident commanders with improved pager coverage and capacity, quicker dispatching, and messaging details for improved situational awareness. Piggybacking emergency dispatches on ATSC 3.0 transmissions removes the requirement for the emergency management community to invest in new transmitters, significantly reducing upgrade and ownership costs.The design will be standards based and open, enabling individual Public Safety Access Points (PSAPs) and emergency services entities to configure their local system. The extensible design supports additional emergency information such as maps, images, text, etc., that are unavailable in conventional paging systems.Questions to be answered: - Can dispatches from multiple PSAPs be captured and Nrmalized to a standards-based protocol for transmission on an ATSC 3.0 transmitter? (Milestone: 5 months post award) - Can a cost effective, wearable, receiver with long battery life be developed with current techNlogy? (Milestone: 3 months post award) - Do key performance indicators compare favorably to traditional paging systems?(Milestone: 6 months post award)Aims are proposed open standards for commercialization of a systems to collect and Nrmalize dispatch data, and an ATSC 3.0 paging system protocol. We will develop a reference design plan for ATSC 3.0 receivers with a variety of applications assisting in the rapid commercialization of pager devices.
