Description
The Air Force is in need of a method to rapidly manufacture lead-based anodes for electroplating. Despite the rapid commercialization of additive manufacturing technology, there is a gap in the ability to additively manufacture lead components. To address these gaps, IERUS and our partner, the University of Alabama, will investigate the use of additive friction stir deposition. During Phase I, the process will be optimized to rapidly deposit lead based alloys directly onto steel and copper core materials. The team will leverage previous experience in processing several different materials and an existing library of parameters and resulting material properties, providing a set of benchmarks for rating deposition quality.
