Description
It is well known that a major source of excessive and wasted electrical energy is inefficient lighting such as incandescent bulbs and older types of ballasts used for fluorescent lights. This inefficient lighting is still being used in residences, buildings and infrastructures including in offices, schools, hospitals, public spaces, warehouses and other industrial buildings, parking lot and garage lighting. Enhanced lighting utilizing solid state lighting could address this problem. Research and development on fundamental based general lighting emitting light sources would lead to new materials and approaches that could be used to dramatically improve the performance by increasing the efficiency, emission, spectral response, etc. of solid-state lighting including conventional and organic light emitting diodes. To address this opportunity we propose to investigate, design, develop and implement low-cost solid-state lighting sources that use innovative solid state lighting as the light emitters to obtain high quality, high efficiency lighting. The prototype innovative solid-state lighting will be used to demonstrate the feasibility of low-cost, high efficiency, compatible family of innovative solid state lighting-based light emitting diodes and apply these in novel ways. Successfully designed, researched, developed, implemented, characterized and tested Proof-of-Feasibility/Concept low cost solid state lighting solutions and provided a report summarizing the results including the proof of feasibility that was performed as part of the Phase I effort. research and develop the successful fundamental Phase Proof-of-feasibility/Concept devices. Achieve new levels of performance including efficacy, efficiency, reliability, flexibility and other measureable metrics. Elevate the fundamental research and development toward lower cost commercial products that are Made in America. Given the projections for increased solid state lighting efficacy, solid state lighting will be the most efficient light sources. We will continue to research, develop and commercialize innovative solid state lighting-based general lighting for a variety of indoor and outdoor lighting applications so as to increase the market adoption for solid-state lighting products. Solid state lighting, including innovative solid state lighting light emitting diodes, has the capabilities to provide significant energy reduction resulting in, among other things, less dependence on foreign sources of energy and less wasted energy including wasted heat energy. Solid state lighting provides quality benefits for general lighting in, for example, residential and commercial applications that are not possible using fluorescent or most other types of lighting. Improved visual quality is a result of several intrinsic characteristics of solid state lighting systems. Given their unique form coupled with power supplies and drivers specifically optimized to enable and exploit the unique form factors and inherent flexibility and digital nature of solid state lighting, tremendous design flexibility is an inevitable result, thereby creating the possibility of new and innovative lamps, luminaires, lighting design approaches, and architectural integration. The public will also greatly benefit from competitive diverse lighting sources and lighting controls that continue to drive cost down while increasing USA manufacturing and creating USA jobs.
