Description
Space is the ultimate GPS-denied environment and requires novel approaches to precision navigation. Open-loop fiber-optic gyroscopes (FOG) enable large bandwidth and dynamic range with low noise. Emerging atom interferometric gyros (AIG) provide extremely high long-term stability and accuracy, but have limited bandwidth due to minimum required atom interaction durations. Combining these two technologies in a hybrid integrated arrangement for guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) for space applications will provide precise, stable, radiation (EMF/EMP)-insensitive functionality even in conditions where conventional systems such as star trackers cannot be reliably implemented. It also enables the capability of pointing and tracking at high precision over extended duration by continuous cross-calibration, and as well as independent of the orientation of the system that employs the device. Synergistic interfacing of these devices, with the AIG “disciplining” the FOG on a periodic basis, has potential to greatly improve overall inertial sensing performance as part of a complete inertial measurement unit (IMU). This project will establish physics-based algorithms and software for synchronizing these two distinct precision devices. Interviews with stakeholders and potential customers will be carried out to refine the value proposition. In Phase II, the multidisciplinary team will demonstrate the innovation with stakeholders to prepare for transition.
