INTELLISENSE SYSTEMS INC — Department of Defense SBIR Phase I: N192-045

Description

To address the United States Marine Corps need for a lightweight micro cooling system for integration with the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) bomb suit, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (ISI) proposes to develop a new High-Efficiency Individual Cooling (HI-Cool) system based on novel integration of convection and evaporative cooling principles controlled by advanced electronics. Specifically, the innovation in cooling vest design and low-power, precisely controlled environmental conditioning not requiring complex pumps or hazardous fluids will enable HI-Cool to keep localized environmental conditions below 80 degrees F and 50% humidity from a sub-5-pound package that can last up to 6 hours in the field. When coupled with ISI’s existing smart-hub wearable technology, the system will also allow power sharing, hot-swapping of batteries, and integrated communications with an end user device such as a smartphone. Ultimately, HI-Cool will keep EOD bomb suit technicians comfortable and prevent overheating, extending possible mission duration while increasing operator safety and effectiveness. In Phase I, ISI will demonstrate the feasibility of HI-Cool by fabricating all HI-Cool subsystems and demonstrating effectiveness in a benchtop prototype. In Phase II, ISI plans to fabricate and validate a full-scale prototype, demonstrating performance through at least 150 simulated deployment cycles.
