Description

To address the Army Product Manager for Precision Fires and Mortars (PdM PFM) need for low power, thermally hardened artillery displays, Intellisense System, Inc. proposes to develop the new Scalable Mortar and Artillery Ruggedized Touch-Capable Display (SMART-D) system based on the unique combination of a novel full-time day- and NVIS-compatible shatterproof, low power, wide temperature range display panel with integrated glove-friendly touch and photovoltaic energy recovery for day (high ambient luminance) operation. Specifically, the innovation in the high efficiency emissive pixel structure capable of wide temperature ranges without use of a heater simultaneously supports low power and low temperature operation. The use of energy recovery supports low power operation in high ambient luminance environments; and the use of optical filtering and radiance limits makes it compatible with night-vision systems, while electromagnetic transparent shielding on plastic substrates and environmental sealing address the PdM PFM performance and operational requirements. Its user interface guidelines will further help reduce power in all conditions. In Phase I, Intellisense will investigate the innovative SMART-D approach, leading to the design and demonstration of a Phase I feasibility prototype and software interfaces addressing the Army requirements. In Phase II, Intellisense plans to further mature the development of a prototype system capable of operating in the intended Army environments.
