Description

Servicemembers exposed to blasts have frequent complaints of vertigo, gaze instability, balance problems, motion intolerance, and other symptoms consistent with peripheral vestibular pathology. Current vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based approach aimed at promoting gaze stability, improving balance, and habituating symptoms. To maintain the high standards of the Military Health System in Access, Quality of Care and Patient Safety, it is important to provide health practitioners with tools to assist them in the assessment and management of vestibular rehabilitation therapy. To address this critical need, Intelligent Automation, Inc., along with Professor Susan Whitney, and Dr. Lewis Nashner is developing the Vestibular Rehabilitation Intelligent Testing, Analysis, and Training Support System (VERITAS). VERITAS helps health providers deliver a vestibular rehabilitation therapy exercise regimen via • Flexible instrumentation of the exercises with inexpensive webcams, body-mounted Inertial Measurement Units and algorithms for objective assessment of gait, balance, gaze stabilization, and dual tasking. • Intelligent decision-support system that provides individualized exercise screening and recommendations based on collection and analysis of objective and subjective data to assess patient performance and reported symptoms. • Virtual reality platform to help motivate and engage patients for faster recovery through gamified therapeutic interfaces. • Convenient logging and upload of data to a secure web portal.
