Description

Obscurants play a crucial role in protecting the US warfighter by decreasing the electromagnetic energy available for the functioning of sensors, seekers, trackers, optical enhancement devices and the human eye. Obscuration capability needs to be significantly enhanced with less toxic, and higher performing materials that have tunable absorbing and scattering bands, specially for the Infrared bands. On the Phase II, Luna developed advanced visual and Infrared (IR) wavelength obscurants based on plasmonic nanomaterials. They exhibit ideal bi-spectral features. This sequential Phase II effert will continue to engineer these plasmonic nanostructrues and scale up the production. Low dimension plasmonic nanostructures will be further developed to enhance the Far-IR optical response. Unique synthesis process and facility will be designed to fabricate these nanostructure based bi-spectral obsbsurants in large scale and with high performance and low cost.
