Description

Reserve batteries are a critical component in many munitions and provide power to the fuze electronics. New munitions under developed have requirements that current reserve batteries cannot meet including high energy density with pulse power capability and long run times of up to 30 days after activation. During the Phase I project, Lynntech developed Li/CFx batteries that possessed high energy density and pulse power characteristics. This cell chemistry was combined with a novel electrolyte to retain high performance down to temperatures of -45 °F. Furthermore, Lynntech demonstrated excellent performance using a simulated load profile and the potential to achieve activation times of <1 second. The overall objective of the Phase II project is to translate the low temperature electrolyte and cell chemistry developed in the Phase I into full-scale reserve battery prototypes for use in future munitions. Lynntech will demonstrate the ability to use low cost, high-volume manufacturing methods to fabricate the main housing of the reserve battery. The main housing will then be coupled to an inertially activated reserve component and tested using 40mm dummy rounds in an air gun to determine battery rise times and discharge performance under simulated operating conditions.
