Description

Mainstream Engineering has designed a 30 kW SiC-based power conditioning surge module (PCSM) to supply surge power and perform distortion power factor correction (HPF) on military tactical microgrids. Mainstream has developed software models/simulations which demonstrate the feasibility of the system. The PCSM has full-load surge operation efficiency of 94.5% on a 120/208 V grid system and 96.3% on a 240/416 V grid system. In 30 kW APF operation, the PCSM has efficiency of 96.7% on a 120/208 V grid system and 98.7% on a 240/416 V grid system. Based on specifications given by the TPOC, we designed the PCSM with a focus on 240/416 V grid voltage but the PCSM hardware can be tailored for 120/208 V applications with minimal modifications. The EMI filter is designed to ensure the PCSM complies with MIL-STD-461 CE-102 emissions for all operating conditions. The final PCSM design can provide surge power for surges as large as 150% generator rated power for the 60 kW AMMPS generators and weighs 297 lbs, 9.3% of the target generator set weight. At the completion of Phase II, Mainstream’s PCSM will achieve a TRL of 6.
