Description

Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have outstanding weight-to-strength relationships, durability, and corrosion resistance compared to traditional alloy materials. PMC prepregs are extremely flexible, allowing for ease of construction of components having highly complex shapes. Cured PMCs are weakest with respect to out-of-plane properties, where only the polymer matrix provides strength. Nanometer-scale vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) are ideal for “stitching” the layers together, thereby reinforcing the matrix-filled interlayer. The extent of the strength enhancement depends heavily on the quality and degree of alignment of the CNTs. Thus, Mainstream proposes a templated approach to the fabrication of the VACNTs which will ensure 100% vertical alignment and will allow for more precise control of VACNT (1) morphology, (2) loading levels, and (3) stitching quality/effectiveness. Additionally the proposed templated approach is highly scalable and relatively inexpensive. The templated approach will improve the effectiveness of VACNTs by providing highly ordered arrangement and physical support during the stitch to prepreg implantation process. All said, the process will allow us to determine the maximum enhancement to the composite’s strength that is possible through the use of VACNT stitching.
