Description

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) of radioactive 18FDG is used today to monitor metabolic activity in tumors and stratify lesion risk via a quantity known as Total Lesion Glycolysis (TLG); however, assessment of TLG using PET has intrinsic sources of error and requires subjecting the patient to a radioactive burden. Non-radioactive 19FDG could, in theory, be used to produce similar information with less sources of error and no radioactive burden using Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) to quantify 19F content in tumors; however the signal from 19F MRS is small compared to 18FDG PET. This project will establish MKT’s novel “dual-frequency feedback” (DF-FB) novel MRS technique as a sensitive method for detecting 19F spins using MRS, this will allow 19FDG dosage to be minimized and lay the foundation for further R+D where TLG assessed by a) 19F MRS and b) 18F PET can be rigorously compared.
