Description

Hydrogen fuel cells are of interest for transportation applications because they produce zero emissions; however, fuel cells currently suffer from the high cost associated with precious metal electrode materials and long-term durability issues associated with voltage transients. In the propose project, we will synthesize and demonstrate the performance of next generation fuel cell electrode catalysts for heavy- duty transportation. The materials will out-perform current precious metal catalysts in terms of cost, efficiency, and durability during operation. The unique properties of these materials allow them to be chemically resistant to degradation mechanisms suffered by traditional catalysts. In Phase I and II materials were developed with sufficient performance for light-duty applications, but further improvements are required to approach heavy-duty applications that are being pursued by customers. At the commercial scale, these materials will be less expensive than electrodes currently used in hydrogen fuel cells and provide better durability. Fuel cell system applications that will benefit most from the technology include heavy-duty transportation (trucks, buses, ships, trains, etc.), automotive, materials handling (i.e. forklifts), fleet vehicles, and stationary back-up power.
