Description

During Phase I, PCI conclusively demonstrated proof-of-concept a system for photovoltaic-powered unmanned humidity control of combat vehicle interiors to avoid corrosion, mold and fungal growth during storage. We designed, fabricated and demonstrated a solar-powered regenerable dehumidifier in a simulated lab-scale chamber. Testing confirmed the possibility of consistently maintaining humidity below 45% (target) even under saturated, 90% or higher humid outdoor conditions via an assembly of simple, inexpensive and reliable components. Minimal power was required and obtained from the solar/battery hybridized power supply. During Phase II, designs will be refined via pilot-scale testing and modelling for adequate flow rate, pressure drop, compatibility with existing ventilation systems, continuous monitoring of Stryker interior humidity and temperature, and efficacy for moisture removal at scale.  During Phase 2, PCI proposes to develop, demonstrate and deliver to the Army a fully-packaged dehumidifier prototype with associated controls and BOP and capable of unattended operation within a stationed Stryker vehicle. The prototype will be capable of maintain the humidity level inside the cabin at optimum levels (RH around 45%) to avoid any degradation of vehicle components.
