Description
The race to develop quantum technology that will transform our communication and computing systems is well underway. To remain competitive, the US must develop quantum components and systems for both terrestrial and space-based applications. Unfortunately, no US supplier of quantum photon sources or detection modules currently offers space-hardened products. To correct this issue, Qubitekk – the leading US manufacturers of quantum entangled photon sources and quantum detection modules - proposes to develop a hardened quantum entangled photon source, single photon detector module, and associated control and measurement electronics required to construct a space-based quantum key distribution system (for satellite communication security applications). In Phase I, Qubitekk and its partner, The Aerospace Corporation, will construct a specifications table identifying key operating requirements for each sub-system for anticipated orbital environments (i.e. Low Earth Orbit - LEO). In addition, a preliminary design review will be performed on existing devices to identify clear failure mechanisms that should be corrected before initial testing along with suspected design weaknesses that should be examined with future testing. Following the preliminary design review and improvement of the existing designs, testing recommendations will be made for evaluating the mechanical, thermal-vac, and radiation survivability and operability of the improved devices. During the first 6-month base period of the project, limited testing will be conducted to evaluate the survivability of key components. If the 4-month optional period is pursued, more detailed sub-system testing will be conducted to identify design modifications – to be implemented in Phase II – to harden each sub-system for improved reliability in the anticipated orbital environment. This Phase I effort is expected to take 10 months (6 months base + 4 months options) and cost $167.5K ($111.5K base + $56K option).
